Sutro Elementary School received seven double-sided chalk/cork boards from the Educator's Closet -- a recycling center where teachers can get free lesson supplies.
The boards, worth about $2,000, were donated to the center by the Legislative Counsel Bureau, according to Educator's Closet coordinator Kristi Pulizzotto. She uses the motto "Don't dump it -- donate it" on the center's phone message.
A Sutro teacher spotted the boards while hunting for lesson-plan props and other educational treasures for her students. She requested them on behalf of herself and several other Sutro teachers.
About 220 area teachers have browsed through the goodies at the center so far this school year, according to Pulizzotto. Donations worth about $67,000 have been made.
"This saves the landfills and saves the teachers from spending out-of-pocket money," said Pulizzotto.
The Educators Closet, in its fourth year, operates on a grant from the Nevada Environmental Protection Agency, which is working to reduce the amount of waste in landfills.
"All (teachers) have to is mark down what treasures they take out," said Pulizzotto. "They come out of here with boxes of stuff."
The Educator's Closet, a yellow building with a blue roof, is at 1402 W. King St. Hours of operation are 1:30 p.m. until 5 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday and from 8:30 a.m. to noon the first Saturday of every month. The phone number is 283-2048.
