City's tree-planting program kicks off

Carson City homeowners who would like to add the beauty of a blossoming tree outside their homes can get help from the city this fall.

The Carson City Parks and Recreation Department is encouraging people to apply for free installation and delivery of a tree, as long as the homeowner pays for the tree and it is planted in the city right-of -way.

"It gives homeowners who may not be able to afford to plant trees in the right-of-way a way to do that," said Scott Fahrenbruch, director of operations.

The program was introduced in 2001 to promote and enhance the city's "urban forest." Once an application is approved, the city will work with the property owner to help select a tree and pay for a contractor to deliver and plant the tree. The cost of a tree is typically $180, Fahrenbruch said.

The city pays the $100 fee to have it planted. Money for the program comes from the city's Quality of Life initiative, approved by voters.

"This is a way to carry out what the ballot question identified was a need for Carson City," Fahrenbruch said.

Six trees were planted in the spring program this year, he said.
