Yerington defeats Wooster

Staff Reports

Derek Lee, Dylan Johnson and Tom Menesini combined to score 42 points as the Yerington High boys basketball team posted a 65-58 non-conference victory at home against Wooster on Tuesday night.

Lee, a 6-foot-5 sophomore, had 16 points while Johnson chipped in with 15 and Menesini 11 to lead a balanced offense in which nine players scored for Yerington (5-1).

The win came against a quality Wooster team (2-3), according to coach Daron Wildermuth.

"Wooster is a good team. They lost to Reed by 13 and beat Spanish Springs, so I was pleased," Wildermuth said. "It's still an early process for us. We're trying to get better each time we go out and play."

The game also marked a homecoming for Wooster coach Kyle Penney, who played for Wildermuth at Yerington.

"Kyle played for me about 10 years ago, so it was nice to see him come back as a coach," Wildermuth said.

Down 17-15 after one quarter, the Lions came back to lead 29-24 at halftime and 48-38 at the end of three quarters. Eight players combined to score Yerington's 33 points in the second and third periods.

"We played good pressure defense and we boarded well. That was probably the difference in the ball game," Wildermuth said. "That and we made some key shots."

The Lions got some clutch shots after Wooster rallied in the fourth quarter. Joey Golaw scored 13 of his game-high 21 points in the second half, eight in the final period, to lead the Colts in their comeback.

"They were pressuring us, but the kids didn't panic. We took care of the ball, found the open person and we made our shots," Wildermuth said.

Down the stretch, Yerington managed to answer Wooster baskets with scores of their own on three occasions: John Little buried an open 3-pointer, while Johnson and Menesini converted layups.

Yerington returns to action next Tuesday with a game at Hawthorne.
