Arts projects in western Nevada awarded $2,655

Western Nevada arts projects received $2,655 in grants from the Nevada Arts Council for projects ranging from a lecture series in Carson City to a mask workshop for Silver Springs Correctional Camp inmates.

Two organizations and two individuals were awarded the grants out of $9,905 in the third quarter of fiscal year 2004 Jackpot Grant funding.

Grants support a variety of arts projects and professional development opportunities in all artistic disciplines.

Jackpot Grants are awarded following a competitive application process and assist artists and arts organizations to produce projects such as visual arts exhibitions and theatrical performances as well as attending conferences.

This quarter's western Nevada Jackpot award recipients are:

n Capital City Arts Initiative, Carson City, $900 for the Nevada Neighbors lecture series

n Squeek LaVake, Virginia City, $800 to present "HARE: A Kid's Rock Musical" at Virginia City Middle School

n Julie Lozada, Dayton, $555, for an Andean Folk Musicians and poetry performance.

n Tahoe Actors Theatre, Incline Village, $400 to present a mask-making workshop at Silver Springs Correctional Camp in Silver Springs.

Other Jackpot award recipients include:

n Don Clark, Reno, $900 to present a public lecture by architect Lorcan O'Herlihy.

n Jeanmarie Simpson, Reno, $600 for a performance of her work, "A Single Woman."

n Dottie Burton, Las Vegas, $850 to attend an artists workshop.

n Fiesta Flamenca, Las Vegas, $900 to present a flamenco dance concert at CCSN.

n First Friday, Las Vegas, $600 for publicity of First Friday events.

n Nevadans Organized to Better Address Diversity, Las Vegas, $400 for film series.

n Eugene Shapiro, Las Vegas, $700 for the jazz quartet Shapiro Project Web site.

n Tom Umholtz, Las Vegas, $600 to repair and restore artists' works damaged by flood.

n Robin Stark, Henderson, $850 to support a ceramics exhibition.

n Stephen Caplan, Henderson, $850 for professional studies.
