Mr. Daines began his career as a public servant in Logan, Utah, where he served as the Logan city auditor. He moved to Nevada in 1968 and became the comptroller of Clark County. In 1983, he was inaugurated as Nevada state controller and served four terms.
As controller, he served as a member of the State Transportation Board, vice chairman of the State Finance Board and president of the National Association of State Auditors, Controllers and Treasurers. He was the board chairman of the Nevada Division of the American Cancer Society and a member of the national board for 10 years.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Ursula.
Among his survivors are: sister Dortha D. Merrill; daughter Judith Daines Mower of Las Vegas; and sons Alan R. of Colorado Springs, Colo., W.B.R. of Reno and Dr. Michael K. of Reno.
