Plans taking shape for addition to Bordewich-Bray

Although different than originally anticipated, plans are beginning to take shape for the addition to Bordewich-Bray Elementary School.

Officials decided against the preliminary two-story plan in favor of a one-story design.

"We think it's going to be more economical to build," said Mike Mitchell, director of operations for the Carson City School District. "We think it's going to be a safer plan, as well. It eliminates the need for stairs, balconies and railings."

Mitchell will present the plans, designed by Sheehan/Van Woert/Bigotti Architects, during Tuesday's school board meeting.

The building will add about 15 new classrooms, special-education resource rooms, a library and a music room.

The administrative office will be moved into the addition and have a more recognizable main entry.

"It will now be more centrally located, where they will have better control of the school itself," Mitchell said.

The same architectural firm, based in Reno, designed Mark Twain and Fremont elementary schools and an addition to Carson City High.

Mitchell said he is, once again, pleased with the plan.

"The input from staff and teachers has been valuable for the architect," he said. "It's really captured what they need. It's going to be a vast improvement to that school.

"I'm excited about it, even though it's not what I originally envisioned."

Work on the building will begin when school is let out for the summer in June.

The addition, funded by a $3.75 million bond passed in November, will replace five portable buildings.

The buildings were demolished after three types of toxic mold were discovered within their walls.
