New administration takes over reins of Sheriff's Department

Sheriff Ken Furlong swore in his undersheriff, chief deputies and deputies during a Monday morning reception at the Carson City Sheriff's Department following his own official oath of office ceremony at the Community Center.

"This is overwhelming -- you cannot imagine. I'm really speechless and I have to give a speech," said Furlong. He then thanked the nearly 100 sheriff's deputies and family members crowded into the briefing room in the old jail facility.

Furlong read aloud the new administration's Code of Ethics. He swore in Undersheriff Steve Albertsen and chief deputies Steve Schuette and Rick Keema, then the deputies as a group, before taking pictures with each one and their families.

Furlong, who wore a sheriff's department uniform, said he'd sworn in about 100 of the 88 officers and 130 employees on staff.

He was pleased by the turnout at the ceremony.

"I was glad to see so many family members. We want to see a lot more of that around here," he said.

"This is a good showing and says that everyone has high hopes for the future," said Schuette to the crowd.

Furlong, who worked for the Nevada Division of Investigations before his Nov. 5 election to his new office, defeated sheriff's Deputy Bob Guimont. Guimont still is working for the department.
