A Fernley man heading northbound on Geiger Grade was killed Sunday evening when the motorcycle he was driving crossed into the path of an oncoming van.
According to police reports, John R. Petty, 35, failed to negotiate a bend on the curving grade about one mile south of Rim Rock Road. His silver Suzuki motorcycle crossed into the southbound lane and crashed head-on into a Dodge van at 5:33 p.m.
Petty was ejected from the motorcycle over an embankment and was later pronounced dead at the scene. The van's driver, Benjamin B. Huffman of Virginia City Highlands, was not injured.
Police do not believe alcohol was a factor in the crash.
