Alleged murderer's trial moved to June

The trial of Christopher Fiegehen, accused of killing his former girlfriend's stepfather Feb. 10, 2002 in Minden, has been postponed until June 23.

"More time is needed to prepare witnesses on a very specific issue, and the prosecution has not as of today provided DNA results," Fiegehen's attorney Richard Young said.

The trial date had been set for Feb. 10, exactly one year after Fiegehen, of Carson City, allegedly attacked his ex-girlfriend's stepfather and mother in the couple's Johnson Lane home.

Alan Chorkey was stabbed fatally in the throat and Lorelle Chorkey was shot in the chest and back of the head.

Although District Judge David Gamble stressed at an earlier hearing he would not easily reschedule the trial date, Gamble changed his mind after Young's statements.

Douglas County Deputy District Attorney Mark Jackson strongly protested.

"You said by setting it out so far, witnesses, family, friends could depend on the date," he said. "We've spent nearly 100 hours just trying to bring in witnesses."

He said witnesses and family had scheduled flights with non-refundable tickets from Hawaii, Arizona, Washington, Oregon and Michigan.

Young also said he was waiting for a DNA file that the District Attorney's Office had not turned over.

Gamble said he understood Christmas vacations had delayed the file's release, but he expressed disbelief that an order for release had not been requested.

"The most just thing to do is continue this matter as briefly as I can," Gamble said. "I apologize to the state for the inconvenience."

Gamble directed Fiegehen be treated like any other inmate in the Douglas County Jail. The order came after a recent claim by Young alleged his client was being mistreated.

Fiegehen, 24, is the adopted son of Allan Fiegehen, one of the owners of Cubix Corp., a computer company. He also has holdings in the Ormsby House Hotel-Casino and Glen Eagles Restaurant all in Carson City.

Despite a restraining order, Fiegehen tried to rekindle a relationship with Alane Dockstader, the Chorkey's daughter, the night before the attack. He fled the area and was arrested April 9 in Vincennes, Ind., after two profiles on Fox television's "America's Most Wanted."
