TRUCKEE, Calif. -- Beverly Marlowe, 65, was in critical condition Saturday afternoon after having survived a plane crash Friday which killed her husband, Richard.

The plane crashed just after 11 a.m. Friday at the Truckee-Tahoe airport, killing pilot Richard Marlowe, 70, of Nevada City, Calif.

The two-seat Globe Swift plane, made in the 1940s, crashed as it was taking off, said Carl Brun, a radio operator at the airport.

His wife was flown to Washoe Medical Center in Reno by helicopter.

Brun said Saturday that National Transportation Safety Board inspectors arrived at the airport about 12:30 p.m. Friday.

"They want to search for some clues before the aircraft is moved," Brun said.

One of the airport's two runways remained open as emergency crews, including two helicopter ambulances and four fire engines, tried to remove the injured passenger from the wreckage.

The couple's son and grandchildren were in a plane ahead of them, according to reports.
