120 YEARS AGO

The Mexican-American War veterans who turned out on Memorial Day were A.D. Treadway, 5th Illinois Infantry; R.W. Bollen, 4th Missouri Cavalry; J.W. Hall, 1st Texas Cavalry; Henry Junkins, 2nd U.S. Dragoons; George Bradley, sloop of war Dale, USN; Cradelbaugh, 2nd Ohio Infantry; E.B. Zabriskie, 4th Illinois Infantry; William Garrard, 16th U.S. Infantry. Mexican-American War veterans buried in the cemetery are comrades Patterson, Mara, Fulton, Haynes and Lehigh.

100 YEARS AGO

No children have been admitted to the State Orphans' Home since last September. Now, with the new law that provides for the admission of non-orphans, five have been admitted. Total is 63, the smallest in more than 15 years.

70 YEARS AGO

Mrs. O.M. Beckstead will celebrate her 86th birthday. She arrived in Nevada in a covered wagon in 1860 with her parents Mr. and Mrs. R.D. Roberts. Roberts owned the Seven Mile House in Jacks Valley during the days of heavy travel to Virginia City. He was a veteran of the Mexican-American War. Mrs. Beckstead has seen the community grow from a single log cabin to its present condition.

50 YEARS AGO

Mrs. Dorothy Taron of Virginia City received an all-expenses-paid trip to New York and a $350 check from Jean Hersholt for her play, "Mrs. Thrasher's Preview," entered in the 12th annual Dr. Christian Award contest. It will be used on the program. She is the first Nevadan to win.

20 YEARS AGO

Gardnerville -- Services for Joseph John Valenzuela, 35, who died in the Washoe Valley mudslide. He owned Graphic Arts Manufacturing and was pastor of Cavalry Church in Carson City.

10 YEARS AGO

Plans for the grand opening of the Pony Express Pavilion June 19 are still in the making, but one deal is solid. Three Dog Night will be there.
