Quiltlets for Mother's Day

Six-year-old Sara Session thinks her mom deserves something special for Mother's Day "because she always reads me stories at night."

Fortunately, Sara has just the right gift.

As part of her kindergarten class at Fritsch Elementary School, Sara and her classmates made tiny quilt squares.

"I like what I spelled on it," she said. "I spelled, 'love Mom.'"

Each week, the students concentrate on a different letter of the alphabet. They made the tiny quilts during "q" week and decided to save them to present to their mothers today.

Volunteers from Capitol Quilt Club added borders and stitched the individual pieces into place-mat-sized quiltlets.

"It was fabulous," Hubert said. "The kids were fascinated. A lot of them had never seen a sewing machine."

The squares were taped together to resemble a full-sized quilt on the wall. The pieces were taken apart Friday so the students could take their individual squares home for Mother's Day.

Each child decorated a square.

"There's a few things on mine," said Spencer Reed, 5. "There's one where we traced our hands and there's a rainbow."

Fallyn Couste, 5, decorated her quilt with flowers.

"I like them and my mom likes them. I like tulips."

Ashley Lyford McGowan, 5, is sure her mom will be pleased with the gift.

"I colored the heart red and I colored it really cute," she said. "I know how to spell 'I love you,' and I spelled that on it.

"My mom loves me making stuff like that. She usually hangs it up on the wall in her room. She has a whole stack of them in there."
