Fire guts Carson mobile home

Firefighters were unable to save a Carson City mobile home on Monday, but they managed to revive a kitten found in the smoldering debris.

"The kitten was about 6 weeks old, and it looked like it got a lot of bad smoke," said Battalion Chief Dan Shirey of the Carson City Fire Department.

He said a paramedic successfully revived the kitten, and it was taken to a veterinarian.

"Hopefully, that little sucker will pull through," he said.

Shirey said the single-wide mobile home at 55 Tiger Drive in the Safari Mobile Home Park was about 30 to 40 percent engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived about 4 p.m.

An unidentified woman and child were inside the home when the fire started and reported the flames "came out from the walls." They fled the home without injury, he said.

Sheriff Ken Furlong tried to comfort the woman, who was too distraught to speak, asking her if she had anywhere to go.

"Whatever you need, you ask me or the sheriff, and we'll see to it that everything is taken care of," Shirey told her as she buried her face in a man's shoulder. He said she will stay with relatives.

The front rooms of the home were destroyed, and the porch was charred. A car in the drivewayhad what appeared to be minor fire damage to its passenger side. Undamaged clothing could be seen hanging from a rod through a rear door.

Shirey said the cause of the fire is unknown. An investigation continues.
