I have two great programs to tell you about. The first one concerns clothing for graduations, unlike senior graduation where beautiful outfits are hidden underneath a robe.
Eighth-grade graduation requires students to wear nice dresses, pleated pants, dress shirts and ties. Every year, 12 to 15 students at both local middle schools cannot afford an appropriate outfit.
Last year, Allison Joffee, a local attorney, sponsored three girls from Carson Middle School. On the way back from their "shopping spree," they decided to thank Joffee in person, covering her desk with slips, nylons, shoes and dresses. Joffee met all the girls personally.
When I asked her to help again, I wanted to know how it made her feel. Joffee replied, "Middle school is an awkward enough time to get through, and I wanted to give three eighth-grade girls a reason to remember their day." I can tell you those girls will never forget.

4-H Summer Camp is in desperate need of more chaperones and scholarships. I need to thank a group that has already set aside money to sponsor several campers -- the Sierra Nevada Porsche Club.
Also a big thank you to William English, who found a good way to honor Pam Rhodes, a retiring teacher at Fritsch Elementary, for her many years of educational dedication to her students. He sponsored children through the Vanguard Co. so those who could not afford to attend can have a fun summer. To help chaperone or sponsor a child, the information is listed below.
If you like to read, do not miss the big Scholastic Warehouse Sale of books at Fritsch Elementary's multipurpose room, starting May 30. Everything will be 50 percent off the cover price.
Finally, bring your family to the free Capital City Community Band concert Wednesday.
