School is almost over and summer events are pouring in. There are plenty of activities for everyone.
Jill Tingy, program director of the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension 4-H Club met with Penny Reynolds, Carson High's Culinary Arts director. Jill decide to help get 4-H involved in a joint project with Carson High School.
Penny had stated that she would like her students to have more opportunities to prepare, cook and present meat in the culinary classes. However, each year Penny only has enough money set aside to purchase one steer, and it is usually gone by October.
Here is Jill's great idea that you can help with. The 4-H club members take responsibility in raising lambs, pigs and steers to be auctioned at the Nevada State Fair livestock sale. Before the sale, you can to through the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension and request a buyer's contract and other information on purchasing an animal. The approximate cost for purchasing a lamb is $500, a pig is $700 and a steer is $1,200.
If you would like to donate the animal purchased, they will give it to the aspiring chefs at Carson High School.
I have one better for service groups like Rotary or Kiwanis: Purchase a steer and schedule your next meeting at the Culinary Arts restaurant at Carson High and watch your money go full circle, plus a great meal.

If your child has asthma, please do not miss this information. I received a call from Louise Martin, who is back at the helm of the American Lung Association. Louise was kind enough to give me all the information for "Camp Breathe Easy." This camp is for children between the ages of 7-14 to learn how to manage their asthma while having fun in a camp setting at Mammoth Lakes.
In addition, for the first time here in Carson City at Mills Park, there will be a one-day asthma camp for children between the ages of 5-13. All the children will learn about asthma while having fun. Do not miss the event it could teach your child life saving information.
As I promised, you can save on photo processing from Smith's Grocery Store. The photo manager, Pam, has promised a $2 rebate on any middle school and high school graduations. Pam stated any rolls that have photos of graduation would get a rebate directly at the register. Thanks, Pam!
