Co-op extension faculty honored

University of Nevada Cooperative Extension faculty won three of eight national first-place gold awards in the 2003 Association of Natural Resource Extension professionals educational materials awards program.

John Cobourn, Incline Village-based water quality specialist and lead author, won a gold award in the long-publication category for his popular "Home Landscaping Guide for Lake Tahoe and Vicinity, 2002 Edition." Other authors honored were Bill Carlos, John Christopherson, Wayne Johnson, Dick Post, the Appeal columnist JoAnne Skelly and Ed Smith.

Loretta Singletary, Lyon County extension educator, received a gold award in the short- publication category for "Public Issues Education: Increasing Competence, Enabling Communities." She co-authored the publication with other nationwide extension professionals.

Ed Smith, Douglas County-based natural resource specialist, and JoAnne Skelly, Carson City/Storey County Extension educator, co-authored "Living With Fire Workshop Materials" (including curricula, video and PowerPoint), garnering a gold award in the mixed-material category.

ANREP honored 25 educational materials produced under the leadership of members across the country. Judges evaluated each material against criteria that emphasized "usefulness to a target audience, innovativeness and potential educational impact."

Washoes take Head Start applications

Washoe Tribe Head Start is accepting applications for the Stewart Head Start Program in Carson City. Applications for the Woodfords and Dresslerville Head Start Programs are also being accepted for the 2003-2004 school year. Enrollment is open to all low-income children ages 3-5 years, including those with disabilities and special needs.

Head Start is a free developmental preschool program. Call 265-4191, ext. 147, for applications and information.

'Music and Mirth' empowers women

"Music and Mirth," a fund-raiser for Women Empowering Women, will be at 6 p.m. Sunday at Meadowdale Center in Gardnerville. The fund-raiser features Cherie and John Shipley and comedian Kat Simmons. Tickets are $10.

Women Empowering Women is a local nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting women of all ages in their basic needs for health and safety, working through agencies for individual women in crisis. Call 782-6779.
