Essay contest winners announced

The winners of the Carson City schools essay contest were announced during Tuesday's school board meeting.

The contest was open to students in public and private schools as well as home-school students. The theme was "Liberty and Justice for All: Define these precepts and write how and why you think they affected the way Americans responded to the attack on Sept. 11."

District officials received 118 entries.

The winners in the elementary school division were:

First Place: Jessica Peterson, fifth grade, Seeliger

Second Place: Elizabeth Pulido, fifth grade, Empire

Third Place: Bailey Kahue, third grade, Mark Twain

Fourth Place: Padon Moore, third grade, Capital Christian

Fifth Place: Kylee Johnson, third grade, Capital Christian

Middle school winners:

First Place: Krystyne Basa, seventh grade, Bethlehem Lutheran

Second Place: Phillip O'Neill, eighth grade, St. Teresa

Third Place: Cloe Westergard, eighth grade, St. Teresa

Fourth Place: Neil Aronson, eighth grade, St. Teresa

Fifth Place: Hannah Nystrom, eighth grade, Bethlehem Lutheran

High school winners, all from Carson High School:

First Place: Anna Macquarie, ninth grade

Second Place: Micah Laack, ninth grade

Third Place: Glenn Rowley, ninth grade

Fourth Place: Chris Moltz, 12th grade

Fifth Place: John Blevins, 12th grade
