Feds grant tribal police $1.2 million

The federal Justice Department has awarded a total of $1.16 million to five Nevada Indian tribes to improve their police departments.

The money was awarded under the Community Oriented Policing Services program to the Fallon Paiute-Shoshones, Moapa Band of Paiutes, Pyramid Lake Paiutes, South Fork Te-Moak Tribe and the Yerington Paiute Tribe.

The money will be used to hire and train police officers as well as buy equipment.

The grants are among 165 grants nationwide in 25 states which will enable tribal police departments to hire a total of 102 additional officers. The grant money pays up to 75 percent of the cost of programs. The tribal governments must come up with the remaining money.

"Nevada's tribal police departments are critical to ensuring the success of our statewide law enforcement and homeland security initiatives," said Daniel Bogden, U.S. Attorney for Nevada.
