Police search for Silver Springs woman who mysteriously disappeared

Lyon County detectives are searching for a 67-year-old woman who mysteriously disappeared Sept. 11 from her Silver Springs home.

Barbara Eleanor Hoover was last seen that morning when her husband left to do banking in Fernley. She was depressed and had threatened to leave several times, Bob Hoover told police.

Detectives are treating the situation as a missing person's case, though no one saw Hoover leave and no cars were taken from the residence.

"We have no evidence to show anything," other than she is missing, said Lt. John Arndell.

Jerry Hoover of Fallon said it is highly unusual for his mom to just walk away. She usually calls her two sons and daughter, Derenda Beard of Redding, Calif., at least every other day, keeping in close contact, he said.

"We're very concerned about the mysterious disappearance," Jerry Hoover said. "That's not of her character at all, just to up and leave."

Her children are asking their mother to contact them, he said.

The couple lives near Lake Lahontan in a well-manicured neighborhood on the corner of Tamarack and Fir streets. Neighbors said they did not see her leave the house that day. Hoover didn't call or contact any of her many friends in the area before disappearing, her son said.

According to her husband, Hoover packed two suitcases and told him she was going to leave for the coast to stay with friends. He told detectives his wife suffered from depression due to the death of her father and other family-related problems and spent the past several months in her room reading.

Hoover suffers from a bladder disorder that requires daily medication, according to the sheriff's office. She is 5-feet, 2-inches tall and between 160 and 170 pounds, with brown hair, hazel eyes and glasses.

Family members described Hoover as a "timid, gentle woman who keeps to herself."
