In another example of government offices migrating to downtown Reno, the Internal Revenue Service plans to move from its office on Moana Lane to 200 S.
Virginia in the heart of downtown.
"We're seeing a resurgence of government moving downtown," said Tim Ruffin, managing partner and vice president of the office properties group at Colliers International in Reno.
"I think we'll see more of it.
Downtown is a central location, the terminus for public transportation, has lots of good restaurants that employees can walk to for lunch.
There are a lot of good reasons for government to be downtown."
The IRS move will follow another federal agency, Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, which is scheduled to expand from its 350 S.
Center location into 4,500 square feet inside 200 S.
Virginia within 120 days, says Ruffin.
And Washoe County is considering purchase of 350 S.
Center, the 86,000- square-foot building directly north of the Reno City Hall, for $9.7 million.
About 40 percent of the building already is leased for county departments including social services and the public defender.
The IRS plans to move its 56 employees into the Wells Fargo building at 200 S.
Virginia by the end of October, according to Bill Brunson, an IRS spokesman.
Its Moana location lease is expiring, according to Bethany Rich, a spokeswoman for the U.S.
General Services Administration in San Francisco.
Rich said the IRS chose its new office based on a competitive bid that was awarded to the lowest cost bid.
The federal tax department is taking about one-third of the ground floor, according to Ruffin.
