Back-to-school shopping isn't usually an option for children living in the shelter provided by Advocates to End Domestic Violence.
So other Carson City children stepped in to help.
"They might have lost a lot," explained Courtney Gates, 9. "Now they're going to get food and clothing from us."
As part of the Recreation Department's Kick Back summer youth program, students were encouraged to donate food, toys and clothing to the shelter during a week-long drive.
Nearly 400 children participated in the drive, which ended Monday when volunteers from Advocates to End Domestic Violence picked up the supplies.
Sara Lemos, a site director for the camp, helped organize the drive.
"We got a ton of donations," Lemos said. "It turned out really well. They learned a lot about giving."
Brianna McCord, 9, said she was hopeful her service would make a difference in the community.
"They'll be able to have food when they need it," she said. "They'll be able to live better lives."
The group that collected the most donations was treated to an ice cream party and a celebration was held for all children Monday morning, with music and dancing.
Traci Trenoweth, volunteer coordinator for advocates, thanked the students for their donation.
"The director, Lisa Lee, thanks you from the bottom of her heart," she said.
Trenoweth said the group initially asked for two barrels to collect donations, but quickly filled them and more.
"We were so excited," she said. "It's neat to see the little kids come out and help us."
