Head-on collision onH-50-Alt. kills one

FALLON - A head-on collision on U.S. 50 Alternate in Churchill County killed a Las Vegas woman and injured two other people.

Emily Schumacher, 19, was killed in the Friday night accident, the Nevada Highway Patrol reported.

The victim was a passenger in a westbound vehicle driven by Daniel Long, 20, of Las Vegas, who was in stable condition with a facial injury at a Fallon hospital.

A preliminary investigation found that Wong's vehicle crossed the center line and struck an oncoming pickup driven by Dwayne Burgess, 63, of Fallon, who was listed in stable condition with knee and facial injuries, troopers said.

Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the 7:55 p.m. accident, which remains under investigation.

Pedestrian struck, killed in Reno

RENO - A pedestrian struck by a vehicle while trying to cross a busy Reno street has died.

Patrick Dowling, 38, of Reno, died at Washoe Medical Center on Friday, five days after the accident on South McCarran Boulevard. The accident remains under investigation.

State official appointed to U.S. printing office

RENO - Former Assemblyman Greg Brower, R-Reno, has been named inspector general at the U.S. Government Printing Office.

Brower, 40, becomes chief auditor of the agency that produces and distributes documents for the federal government.

He was appointed by Bruce James, the agency's head. James, who is from Crystal Bay on Lake Tahoe's north shore, earlier named two other Nevadans to top posts: Frank Partlow of Reno and Veronica Meter of Las Vegas.

Brower, a lawyer, had worked in the U.S. Justice Department, managing congressional matters for 93 U.S. attorneys across the country.

HIV-positive men suspected of illicit sex

RENO - Two HIV-positive men have been arrested in the Reno area on suspicion of engaging in sex without disclosing the illness, police said.

A man who goes by the name Sheila Henderson was arrested Monday after being accused of performing unprotected oral sex for $45 with a man he solicited in downtown Sparks, investigators said.

The unidentified man, who was not arrested, said he thought Henderson was a woman and was not told he was HIV positive. Henderson, 43, learned about his HIV status in 2000 from Alameda County, Calif., authorities.

Dennis Guerra Jr., 27, of Reno, was arrested Nov. 16 after a former girlfriend revealed to authorities that she had unprotected sex with him in January, police announced last week.

The woman was unaware of Guerra's HIV status until months later when the man's father mentioned it. She reported the incident to police in September.

Washoe County District Attorney Dick Gammick said his office has charged nine people with intentional transmission of HIV since 1998. The penalty for the felony is two to 10 years in prison.

Record UNR winter commencement

RENO - About 1,500 students received diplomas Saturday in the largest winter commencement in the history of the University of Nevada, Reno.

Among the latest graduates was Mary Etezadi, who became the first student to be chosen a Senior Scholar from two of the university's eight colleges.

She won the honor by having the highest cumulative grade-point-average in both the College of Science and College of Engineering.
