Evelyn Elizabeth Vaughan

A graveside service for Evelyn Elizabeth Vaughan, 88, of Sunnyvale, Calif., will be at 2:30 p.m. Dec. 20 at Alta Mesa Cemetery in Palo Alto, Calif.

Mrs. Vaughan died Nov. 26, 2004, at El Camino Hospital in Mountain View, Calif., following a short illness.

She was born Jan. 8, 1916, in Carson City to Harold J. and Sophia L. Bawden Vaughan.

Her father had a business in Carson City and later worked for the state of Nevada.

Her mother's parents lived in Gold Hill.

Her grandmother was born in a covered wagon in the Humboldt Sink.

Her grandfather, Joseph Bawden, was a hotel man and later a blacksmith in the Gold Hill mines. He helped feed and house people after the big Virginia City Fire of 1875 and its famous snow blockade of 1889-90.

She graduated from Carson High School in 1933 and attended Nevada Secretarial School. After graduation, she worked for the state of Nevada. She was a former Miss Carson City.

During World War II, she worked for the Joshua Hendy Iron Works and later worked for the city of Sunnyvale, Westinghouse, Ferry Morse Seed Co. and Kemper Insurance. She was active in Sunnyvale Rebekah Lodge No. 363.

She was preceded in death by her younger sister, Lola Vaughan; and half-brother, Douglas A. Vaughan.

Among her survivors are her nephew and wife, Douglas L. and Barbara Vaughan and their daughter, Christine, all of Redwood City, Calif.; and sister-in-law Elinor Vaughan of Los Gatos, Calif.
