John P. 'Jack' Cavanaugh

A funeral for John P. "Jack" Cavanaugh, 79, a Carson Valley resident for the past 10 years, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Gall Catholic Church in Gardnerville.

A viewing will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Gall, and a rosary will be said at 10:30 a.m.

Mr. Cavanaugh died Dec. 13, 2004, in Gardnerville.

He was born May 19, 1925, in Springfield, Ill., to Owen and Elizabeth Cavanaugh.

He received a bachelor of science degree from Missouri School of Mines.

Before moving to this area, he lived in Alameda, Calif., for 22 years.

Mr. Cavanaugh was a mining engineer. He was a member of the Carson Valley Historical Society, and he was a Catholic. He had an avid interest in history and politics and enjoyed all animals, especially his dog. Mij.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946.

He was preceded in death by his son, Barry Patrick Dec. 7, 1961.

Among his survivors are his wife, Catherine of Gardnerville; daughters and sons-in-law Brenda and Edward Dowd of San Francisco and Karen and Thomas Giuggio of San Diego; daughter Mary Cavanaugh of Alameda; son and daughter-in-law John and Carolyn of Pleasanton, Calif.; grandson, Alec Trentler of Alameda; brothers and sisters-in-law; nieces; nephews and cousins.

Burial will be Tuesday in Calvary Cemetery in Springfield.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Gall Catholic Church or the Carson Valley Historical Society Museum and Cultural Center.
