Wisdom on small signs draws widespread raves

The mayor likes them.

So does the president of the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce.

Ditto for a tourist from Germany.

And now a series of signs with messages such as "No Frowning Zone" installed around downtown Reno will be recognized as one of the 100 coolest design ideas of the year by Step, a magazine for graphic designers.

The signs, the brainchild of Stan Byers, vice president and creative director of Reno's Rose- Glenn Group, have drawn e-mail raves from around the world and boosted traffic to the Web site welovethisplace.org by more than 15-fold.

Next up? Byers talks about creating more of the signs and installing them around the region sometime this spring.
