Law enforcement to crack down on seat-belt violations

The Nevada and California highway patrols will conduct a joint seat-belt enforcement Sunday along the Interstate 80 corridor in North Reno.

"We will be citing every driver and passenger who is not restrained," said Trooper Chuck Allen.

With the seat-belt violation as a secondary offense in Nevada, troopers cannot stop vehicles simply for the driver or occupants being unrestrained, Allen said.

But in California, it's considered a primary violation, and troopers can stop unrestrained drivers based solely on seat-belt violations, he said.

"It's a proven fact that seat belts save lives, especially during a rollover accident," Allen said. "Our goal in this joint effort is to gain compliance with the use of seat belts and educate the public on how important seat belts are."
