The new owners of the chain of Sparky's sports bars plan to open two new locations in northern Nevada.
Golden Tavern Group, a subsidiary of Las Vegas-based Golden Gaming Inc., purchased the popular chain of sports bars from founders Andy Black and David Martin in October.
The group, known for owning the popular PT's sports bars in Las Vegas, also acquired two other establishments which also were owned by Black and Martin The Little Waldorf Grill and The Doghouse Pub and Grill.
Steve Arcana, director of operations for Golden Gaming, said Martin and Black had been looking to sell Sparky's and the Las Vegas group was looking for an opportunity in expand to northern Nevada.
"Golden Gaming is looking to continue an aggressive growth operation," Arcana said.
For Golden Tavern and its parent company, the acquisition was a major step in getting its foot in the door of the northern Nevada market.
Golden Gaming is the largest tavern operator in the state, managing 34 locations under six different brand names.
In addition, Golden Tavern has plans to open new Sparky's locations in Carson City and in South Meadows in March while introducing some new innovations.
For instance, the Carson City site will feature an ovalshaped stadium-seating configuration for patrons to view a 20-screen wall for sporting events.
"Carson City doesn't seem to have a lot of taverns operating in that area," Arcana said.
"We're really excited about the Carson site."
Meanwhile, Golden Tavern will open two other locales, Sierra Gold and Sierra Junction, on South Meadows Parkway just across the street from the new Sparky's location.
In a deal brokered by Kelly Bland of Colliers International, the company leased 5,700 square feet and 2,800 square feet for the pubs.
Golden Tavern also has been renovating the four existing Sparky's locations.
Arcana said much of the renovation work was done to separate bars from dining areas.
The changes allow management to comply with regulations that persons under 21 are not allowed in a bar area.
Changes are also in store for The Little Waldorf and The Doghouse.
Arcana said the company is still looking into ideas for those locations.
