Layups pay off for Carson girls

They were just layups, but the Carson High School girls basketball team cashed in on enough of them to run away with a 70-47 home victory against North Valleys Tuesday night.

The Senators shot 29-for-52 (56 percent) from the floor, with 15 of those field goals coming on layups en route to the Sierra League victory at Morse Burley Gymnasium. They were also an impressive 11-for-13 on layup attempts in the second half.

Coach Alana Williams was pleased to see all those high-percentage shots as the Senators scored a season-best 70 points.

"That's good to see," Carson coach Alana Williams said. "I feel confident when they're moving fast. They were playing hard to make those."

Sophomore center Nicole Scott scored eight points in the first quarter to help stake Carson to a 16-9 lead. Then senior guard Katie Kotter, a fourth-year starter at Carson, went for 13 in the second quarter as the Senators extended their lead to 38-21 at halftime.

Kotter finished with 19 points, Scott 14 and Ciarra Christian 13 to lead a balanced offense in which a total of 10 players contributed.

"I think our non-starters are doing a great job," Williams said. "We're getting contributions from everybody and that's only going to help make us a better team."

Andrea Hoff also scored eight points and Liz Rankl six for the Senators.

North Valleys was led by 6-foot-3 sophomore Anita Burdick with 19 points. Catrina Cherry also scored 10 and Robin Swain eight, including a pair of 3-pointers.

The Senators (6-2 in league, 16-8 overall) play twice this weekend as they travel to South Tahoe on Friday and then play at Wooster on Saturday.

FRESHMEN

Anna Macquarie and Lindsay Ford scored eight points each to lead a balanced offense as the Carson frosh girls remained unbeaten in league with a 40-30 victory against North Valleys in Reno.

Ten players scored overall for the Senators, who improved their league record to 8-0 (15-5 overall).

Hannah Works contributed five points and was also part of a defensive effort which resulted in 20 steals for the Senators.

Carson led 12-6 after one quarter.
