Deputy shot after raid on house

Two simultaneous drug raids in East Carson City ended with a family arrested and a deputy suffering from a superficial leg wound following the "accidental discharge" of a shotgun.

Carson City Sheriff's Sgt. Bob Guimont was struck by fragments after the weapon of another member of the Special Weapons and Tactics Team went off, striking the metal threshold of the doorway in which the two officers were standing.

Officers had just secured the home at 2409 Tenaya Drive on the authority of a Tri-Net Drug Task Force search warrant, said Sheriff Kenny Furlong.

"During the securing of the house, there was an accidental discharge of a shotgun into the floor," he said. "The accident is under investigation."

Guimont, a former candidate for sheriff, suffered a grazing wound to his thigh that didn't require stitches, Furlong said. "He was treated at the hospital and returned to regular duty."

Furlong said the team was called in to assist Tri-Net because they had information there would be several weapons in the home.

Tri-Net Lt. Scott Jackson said a dozen firearms were found in the home, along with more than a pound of marijuana and counter-surveillance equipment.

Luis Fuentes, 21, the only person at the home at the time, was arrested on suspicion of felony possession with intent to sell and possession of a controlled substance.

At the same time the Tenaya Drive search warrant was being executed, Tri-Net officers raided the Taqueria Urupan Mexican Restaurant on Goni Road and arrested business owners Alberto, 45, and Martina Fuentes, 44, on drug charges.

Alberto Fuentes was taken into custody on suspicion of felony possession of marijuana with intent to sell and two counts of sales and possession of a controlled substance.

Martina Fuentes was arrested on suspicion of felony possession of a controlled substance. Luis Fuentes is the couple's son, Jackson said.

The Fuentes have owned the Tenaya address since 1992 and the restaurant has been in business since 1997, according to city records.

Jackson said Tri-Net seized $4,000 in cash, the firearms and a truck.
