Even though the construction of model homes still is months away, some 3,000 people have expressed interest in buying homes in a Del Webb community in Reno.

And some of them have told employees of the company that they're ready to write a check on the spot for one of the 850 homes planned by Del Webb, a unit of Pulte Homes of Bloomfield Fields, Mich.

The community known as Sierra Canyon in west Reno will be developed as part of the 2,372-acre Somersett, a masterplanned golf course community.

It's marketed to 55- to 65-year-old active seniors.

"We are moving. We are moving fast," said Judy Bennett, director of public affairs for Del Webb's northern California communities.

She said pre-sales for Sierra Canyon are scheduled to begin April 3, and model homes will be available by summer.

The potential buyers, Bennett said, include residents of northern Nevada, the Las Vegas area, Arizona and California including, to her surprise, a healthy number of inquiries from San Diego residents who hope to move to northern Nevada.

She said city officials the project is within Reno's boundaries have helped to expedite the project.

"The city of Reno has been wonderful," she said.

"This has been smooth as glass compared to what we've encountered in California."

Del Webb's northern California development is centered at Lincoln, just east of Sacramento.
