Vehicles stopped in search for hit-and-run driver

INCLINE VILLAGE - Nearly 100 motorists were stopped at a roadblock on the Mount Rose Highway near Highway 28 Tuesday by authorities hoping for information about a jogger who was killed by a hit-and-run driver last week.

Incline Village resident Joe Borgerding was struck by an oncoming vehicle between 6:20 and 6:45 a.m. Feb. 10 as he was jogging along the highway.

He was wearing a gray sweat shirt, black athletic pants and white tennis shoes when he was hit and was found at 6:45 a.m. by a Nevada Department of Transportation crew member.

Nevada Highway Patrol troopers stopped 96 vehicles, asking drivers if they had information concerning the hit-and-run fatality. Drivers were asked a series of questions. Most of the commuters had heard about the fatality and thought the roadblock was a good idea, said the Nevada Department of Public Safety.

Investigators have narrowed their search to a large 1994 to 1998 model Chevrolet, most likely a full-size pickup, or a Tahoe or a Suburban. The impact broke the right front headlamp and amber light.

Although possibilities have surfaced nearly every day since the accident, none have panned out.

Investigators are looking for anyone who might have been traveling on the Mount Rose Highway between 6 and 7 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10 . They are also inquiring if the person noticed any joggers or vehicles during that time, especially trucks matching the suspect vehicle description.

n Anyone who has information about the fatality is asked to call 832-4110; Nevada Highway Patrol at 688-2500, or Secret Witness at 322-4900. Secret Witness is offering a $1,500 reward for information leading to the arrest of the driver.
