Peg-leg pirate crowned Mr. Carson High

Robby Liebherr returned to Carson High School on Monday with a new distinction - he's Mr. Carson High.

"Everybody's been congratulating me all day," he said. "It's pretty cool."

Even one of the deans stopped him in the hallway to mockingly ask for an autograph.

Pedro Cortez-Rangel was named first runner-up.

The pageant, which began 13 years ago as a spoof on Miss America, pits 12 seniors against each other in a competition of outrageous performances.

Liebherr performed with the other contestants in the "Pirates of the Caribbean Intro," where he strapped a plunger to his knee to create a peg leg.

For his individual talent competition, he returned to the stage in a tutu to perform what he called the "Man Dance."

The leaps and pirouettes in front of a packed auditorium at the Carson City Community Center on Sunday night left him no reason for shame come Monday morning.

"I like being in front of all those people," he said. "It's great. The more the merrier."

And he wasn't alone in his antics.

"All the other guys were doing things that they probably wouldn't do every day," he said. "It doesn't make any difference to me."

What set him apart from the others?

"I'd have to say, man, I don't know, I did my best to show my personality to the judges," he reasoned.

Still, he claims the fame and recognition has not changed who he is.

"I'm just the same ol' kid," he said.

A varsity athlete in swimming, soccer and skiing, Liebherr plans to attend the University of Nevada, Reno, next year to major in electrical engineering. He also plans on competing in triathlons.

The proceeds from the pageant goes to purchase new uniforms for the Carson High School cheerleaders.
