It's retraction time ... Ben Grissom states he only knows "everything" on New Year's Eve while drinking free wine at Fred Stanio's ... ratz, now we have to save up our questions for a whole year ...

Is it only us, or does the mercury scare at Pa-Wa-Lu seem like overkill? We both remember covering coins with mercury and using it in science classes ... and we were not dumb enough to swallow it or heat it to inhale the fumes. We also know that continued exposure to mercury, or asbestos, or lead (the list goes on), can lead to all kinds of dreadful problems ... but it seems to us that "cottage industries" have been spawned in this country that try to protect us from everything that could go wrong ... an impossible task ... Oh well, maybe the exposure to mercury long ago did warp our brains ... no comments from the peanut gallery ... (geez, even peanuts can kill some people ... and alcohol and tobacco ... where will it all end?)

Carol's New Year's resolution fell by the wayside only seven days into the new year ... it was the day Lee, the Schwan's man, delivered a "pecan pie ala mode" cup ... One guess on what the resolution was ...

"Breakfast with Mozart" with Jackie Maye, Ryan Rothchild and Peg Kehres, was a great success last Saturday in Senator Square. We were all treated to a continental breakfast and grand music and singing. We got to sit with Jan(et) and Jim Andersen, Liz Mitchell, Tom Strekal and Terry Ward, and saw lots of other great people we know, including C. J. Birch, Dr. and Mrs. King, and Roz Works, who is looking wonderfully well after her hospital stay. Patricia Elliott bid on having lunch with us, and "won" ... we're looking forward to it ... we won't be having cocktails, however, since Maizie was seen talking to the guy in the tux at the silent auction table, at least until she looked up and saw he had no head ... Which one was the dummy?

Do you ever notice that the people who write about "getting organized" make it difficult to do so? Making a list of what you have to do is good, but in our opinion (contrary to theirs) do the easy stuff first and leave the hard stuff for later ... That way you can cross off all the easy things as you do them, and have the satisfaction of seeing all the things you've done before tackling the last one or two hard things to do ... Makes you feel like you've really accomplished something and gives you the energy to know you're almost done ... works every time ...

Why is it that almost all of the bus stops in Carson City are unprotected? Not fun on a rainy or snowy day. It would sure be nice if they could have a protective wall around them like at the Highway Department ... Who do we call?

There was a little boy, about 4 years old, at the Creekside restaurant a while back, who was talking to his mother about what to have for lunch. She was there with him and his little sister discussing choices with the waitress.
Mom and the waitress both decided, with some coaxing, that a "grill cheese sandwich" (yes, we know it should be "grilled," but that's the way they said it) with fries would be quite the thing. As the waitress left, the little boy looked up at his mother rather sadly and said, "Why can't I have a 'boy' cheese sandwich?"... Makes perfect sense when you think about it...

Well, we see that the Hispanic population (or "vote" as the case would be) is being courted these days ... it seems to us that people can become part of this country by means that are already legal, without putting Social Security, immigration and citizenship laws in jeopardy ... we need hardworking people here, but not by making an end run around the law ...
