Breathin' easy: Asthma camp draws Carson City youth

A dozen campers went Hawaiian on Friday during Camp Easy Breezy at the Pony Express Pavilion in Mills Park.

The camp was put on by Kids Helping Kids and the American Lung Association for children with asthma and other respiratory problems such as those from food allergies.

Activities were led by 16-year-old Jeff Lambin, of Carson Valley. The camp was brought to Carson City last year by his sister Rachael and brother John Henry, both who have asthma. This year, Jeff, led campers on his own while his siblings helped with a camp in California.

Nursing students from the University of Nevada, Reno Orvis school of nursing were on hand to care for campers along with respiratory therapist Debra Currie and child psychologist Dr. Dwayne Runyan from Carson-Tahoe Hospital. The Teens Against Tobacco Usage did an anti-smoking demonstration and Bill Knight brought in his clean-air equipment.

For fun, campers at the day-long camp, held in the Pony Express Pavilion, made leis, decorated thongs and sun glasses and had water balloon fights.
