With an emphasis on organizing community watch programs, the Carson City Sheriff's Department will host its second annual National Night Out celebration at Mills Park.
From noon to 9 p.m. Aug. 3, members of various Northern Nevada law enforcement agencies will be in Mills Park to meet with the public, said Carson City Sheriff's Lt. Ray Saylo.
National Night Out is intended to:
• Heighten awareness of drug and crime prevention efforts
• Generate support and participation in crime prevention efforts
• Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police community relations
• Send a message to criminals to let them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back
Participating agencies are the Nevada Highway Patrol, Capitol Police, Nevada State Parks, Secret Witness, Parole and Probation, Department of Public Safety, Department of Wildlife, Marine Corps, Army and Air Force, Tribal Police Red Cross and Search and Rescue.
A bike rodeo will begin at 1 p.m. Care Flight will land a helicopter at 2 p.m. There will be giveaways such as T-shirts, Frisbees, balloons and hot dogs.
Last year, Carson City was selected as "Rookie of the Year" for its first National Night Out event.
