Fire academy graduates 37

Following three weeks of intensive training, 37 Nevada Division of Forestry seasonal firefighters graduated from the Wildland Fire Academy.

The Academy was conducted at the Regional Public Safety Training Center under the leadership of the forestry division's training captains, with forestry station personnel and command staff providing assistance.

This was the first statewide academy, with seasonal firefighters from Elko in the north, Mount Charleston in the south, and the Sierra Front in the west. In addition to basic firefighting skills, seasonal firefighters learned to drive fire engines, and operate chain saws and pumps. There was a strong emphasis on safety and teamwork. Seasonal firefighters are now staffing fire engines around the state, working on fire suppression, fire prevention, and fuels management.

The Nevada Division of Forestry's Wildland Firefighter Seasonal Program is one of the many ways the agency fulfills its commitment to reducing the risks associated with wildland fires on public and private lands in Nevada.
