Detective nabs missing jail trusty

A Carson City detective on the trail of an escaped jail trusty captured the wayward inmate at a College Parkway apartment complex Wednesday morning.

Anthony Wygant, 36, was caught in a field north of 500 West College Parkway after Carson City Detective Bob Motamenpour knocked on the door of Mary Maynard-Bailey's first-floor apartment.

Motamenpour said Maynard-Bailey, 46, denied Wygant was in the apartment, but the detective spotted him jumping out of a window and followed.

After a short foot chase, Wygant was taken into custody and charged with felony escape. Maynard-Bailey was charged with harboring a fugitive and obstructing.

Police discovered Wygant was missing when an off-duty deputy who knew he was serving three months on a probation violation spotted him at Safeway on Monday. When the deputy approached Wygant, he allegedly fled.

Motamenpour said Wygant, who became a trusty on June 8, had only three weeks left to serve.

Jail trusties are free to move about the safety complex for various tasks, such as moving furniture or cleaning the complex. They are trusted to check in at specific times.

Motamenpour said when Wygant was captured he was remorseful.

"He said he was stupid for running," Motamenpour said. "He said he was outside moving desks and he suddenly decided to go for it."
