All baits are 'on fire' on East Carson River

BISHOP CREEK AREA, CALIF:

Gary Olson of the Bishop Creek Resorts (760-873-4484) reported:

Intake No. 2: Continues to be a favorite for float tubers.

Tan or white Stingers have been very productive.

A 2-pound, 8-ounce rainbow on a green Woolly Bugger fly.

North Lake: Very good with salmon eggs or an olive Woolly Bugger fly and a bobber.

Rainbow or green Power Bait were also good.

South Lake: The fishing remains very good.

Power Bait and nightcrawlers are great from shore, along with red/gold Thomas Buoyant lures.

A 4-pound, 7-ounce rainbow on an orange Super Hoochie.

Weir Pond: No report.

Bishop Creek: Nightcrawlers or Salmon eggs are doing very well.

Anglers working the smaller pools with Stingers and catching lots of limits.

BISHOP CREEK AREA, CALIF:

Sabrina Lake: Carolyn Webb of the Lake Sabrina Boat Landing (760-873-7425): No report.

BLUE LAKES, CALIF. AREA:

Dave Kirby of the Woodfords Station (530-694-2930) said that fishing remains good on inflated nightcrawlers or Power Bait, and to go prepared with plenty of repellent for mosquitoes.

BRIDGEPORT RESERVOIR, CALIF: Jim Reid of Ken's Sporting Goods Store (760-932-7707) said, "It has been doing great for boats stillfishing with nightcrawlers, Power Bait or Power Eggs. The shore fishing has been pretty quiet. They are getting mostly 2-3 pounders with some 4-pounders.

BURNSIDE LAKE, CALIF: Dave Kirby reiterated that Calif. DF&G will not plant the lake this year.

EAST CARSON RIVER AREA, CALIF: Todd Sodaro at the Carson River Resort (877-694-2229) reported the East Carson River water is looking perfect for fishing.

All baits are "on fire!"

Flies such as Prince Nymphs or Copper Johns are starting to pick up.

Big fish of the week were:

A 3-pound, 15-ounce rainbow on Salmon eggs by a Sacramento angler.

A 3-pound, 7-ounce rainbow on Power Bait by Jorge Ortiz of Carson City.

A 3-pound, 6-ounce rainbow on Salmon eggs by Gregg Hirota of Carson City.

WEST CARSON RIVER AREA, CALIF: Dave Kirby reported that the West Carson is fishing about as good as you would ever want it to be.

It was planted last Friday with 80 percent rainbow, 10 percent German brown and 10 percent Eastern brook trout.

The trout were average-size with a few trophy-size fish.

Chris Coons of Gardnerville caught a 3.5 pound rainbow on Turbo-Green Power Bait.

Last Saturday, Kansas and Sean, both of Woodfords, caught their limits of rainbow trout on 1/8 ounce gold Panther/Martin lures.

CATNIP RESERVOIR IN NORTHERN WASHOE COUNTY: Will open Sept. 1.

DAVIS LAKE, CALIF: Sara at the Grizzly Store and Resort (530-832-0270):

Trolling is fair, but better in the p.m. Best action is in main channel from boat ramp to island. Troll 20-25 feet deep with Needlefish lures.

Shore fishing is spotty.

Fly fishing is good for some, bad for others. Best areas from Camp Five to Cow Creek.

FEATHER RIVER AT OROVILLE, CALIF: Kirk Portocarrero reported that he and his clients are catching a few nice chrome King Salmon, 12-25 pounds. Not real consistent, right now. Back-trolling with Flatfish lures, between Oroville and Gridley. Water flow is 4,000 CFS.

HEENAN LAKE, CALIF: Will open Sept. 3.

INDIAN CREEK RESERVOIR. CALIF: Dave Kirby said that fishing was pretty slow due to the warm weather and the blooming of the algae in the water.

The two 15-pound rainbow planters (one is almost 16 pounds!) have not yet been caught.

Summit Lake (above Indian Creek Reservoir): Was planted last Friday with 80 percent rainbow, 10 percent German brown and 10 percent Eastern brook trout. The trout were average-size with a few trophy-size fish.

The water depth is about 10 feet and the lake is still very fishable.

KIRMAN (CARMEN) LAKE: Jim Reid that fly fishermen in float tubes are getting about 3-4 fish per angler.

LAHONTAN RESERVOIR, NEV: Shirley at Burke's Market at Silver Springs (775-577-2750) said, "We've had all kinds of people catching fish.

Last Wednesday, Tim Tilton of Silver Springs caught a 7-pound Walleye, while trolling a yellow Roostertail lure in front of Beach No. 4.

In addition, Homer Surface of Carson City caught a stringer of fish that included Walleyes up to 4 pounds and White Bass up to 1.5 pounds.

PYRAMID LAKE, NEV: Is closed to cutthroat trout fishing until Oct. 1.

RAYMOND LAKE, CALIF: Dave Kirby reported that a backpacker reported that he caught and released a total of 20 Golden trout, taken on small lures and dry flies over two days.

RED LAKE AREA, CALIF: Dave Kirby said that the fishing has been pretty good but the lake has been very windy in the afternoons.

A report of a mixed limit of brookies and cutthroat trout taken with Power Bait.

SACRAMENTO RIVER, CALIF: Kirk Portocarrero of Outdoor Adventures Sport Fishing, Redding, Calif. (800-670-4448) sent in this report:

Redding to Anderson: Water flow is 15,000 CFS.

Fishing for rainbow trout is great with 15-30 fish days. Catching and releasing wild, trophy rainbows, up to 6 pounds. Using Pheasant Tails, Prince Nymphs, Caddis patterns and egg patterns.

Red Bluff: The King Salmon season will open on July 16. Fish count over the Red Bluff Diversion Dam is 1,422 King Salmon as compared to 973 last year, same date.

SHASTA LAKE, CALIF: Kirk Portocarrero reported some limits of King Salmon 1-4 pounds and up to 23 inches. Trolling with Shad pattern lures. Catching rainbows and Salmon in the Dry Creek Area.

LAKE TAHOE - North Shore:

Mickey Daniels of Mickey's Big Mack Charters (800-877-1462) said: "We've been catching our Mackinaw trout early in the morning and I've been tagging and releasing the smaller ones.

The fishing has been very good but nothing super big.

I troll 250-550 feet deep in the deep-water area in front of Carnelian Bay and King's Beach.

We are using silver, Herring Dodger flasher blades with live minnows or large Apex lures.

On Saturday, I took a boatload of people sightseeing along the west shoreline. They all belong to website ModernSportsman.com and they were part of the Second Annual Western Get Together in Carson City."

Gene St. Denis of Blue Ribbon Charters and Tahoe Trophy Trout at South Lake Tahoe, Calif. (530-544-6552) said he is trolling with a short leader, Herring Dodger flasher blades and live minnows at 150-300 feet deep in the Tahoe City area.

Last Friday, Dave Chaney of Portland, Oregon caught a 19.5-pound (33 inches) Mackinaw trout.

His previous largest fish, anywhere, was a 17 inch trout in Oregon.

Dave, his son Andrew and Don Quilici of Carson City all caught their limits of Macks.

LAKE TAHOE - South Shore:

Gene St. Denis of Blue Ribbon Charters and Tahoe Trophy Trout at South Lake Tahoe, Calif. (530-544-6552) said he is trolling in the Camp Richardson and Baldwin Beach areas with a short leader, Herring Dodger flasher blades and live minnows at 160-280 feet deep.

LAKE TAHOE - East Shore:

Gene St. Denis said that Cave Rock Shelf has been producing mostly smaller fish. Jiggers are doing the best. The Macks are running 1-3 pounds with nothing over 5 pounds.

TOPAZ LAKE: Chuck Fields of the Topaz Lake Marina (775-266-3550): Fishing has been about the same as it was last weekend.

They are catching rainbows that are running 1.5 to 1.75 pounds and it is taking about 4 hours to catch your limit.

The best fishing time, right now, is from about 9 a.m. to about 1 p.m.

The best fishing is on the southwest end of the lake for both the shore fishermen and boater who are still fishing.

The best bait has been nightcrawlers.

TWIN LAKES, CALIF. AREA:

Lower Twin: The Twin Lakes Resort (760-932-7751): No report.

Upper Twin: Mono Village (760-932-7071) reported:

A 6-pound, 5-ounce German brown on a gold Kastmaster lure.

A 5.5 pound rainbow on a Mosquito fly.

A 3.75 pound rainbow on a broken-back Rapala lure.

Stringers of pan-sized rainbows coming in on Salmon eggs, nightcrawlers or all colors Power Bait from shore and boats.

Robinson Creek: No report.

VIRGINIA LAKES, CALIF. AREA: Carolyn of the Virginia Lakes Resort reported that thunderstorms were the mainstay for the Virginia Lakes area last week and it is expected to continue.

Warmer that normal temps continue to increase the mosquitoes.

All of the "tidbits" that trout feast on are making it a wonderful occasion for a piscatorial pursuit.

Backcountry anglers are being eaten alive by the mosquitoes but that is the price for solitude.

White Lightning, Power Worms and Lemon Twist Power Bait were the top munchies of the week.

WALKER RIVERS:

East Walker (Calif.): Jim Reid said that it still about the same as last week. Nymphs are working the best. The water flow is 240 CFS.

West Walker (Calif.): Jim Reid said the river is fishing really well with just about anything. The water is clear and down.

Little Walker (Calif.): Good for small rainbows and brookies on worms or Salmon eggs in the Willow Flat area.

WILDHORSE RESERVOIR NEV: Dennis Dunn at the Wild Horse Resort (775) 758-6472 said, "The weather is great, it's cool and sunny, and all of the fishing is pretty good.

The trout fishermen are catching either 8-12 inch planters or big trout.

The perch fishermen need to get past all of those 3-4 inch perch to get to the bigger ones.

We have what we think is a new reservoir record for a Channel Catfish.

Vic Cunningham of Elko was fishing in the Hendrick's Creek area with worms and he caught a catfish that weighed 22-pounds, 6-ounces.

The road construction is still shut down as they wait for a grinder that is being used somewhere else."
