Questions that need to be asked: (we will appreciate any comments you hazard to make at editor@nevadaappeal.com) What's happening to Jethro's? Why do we have eyebrows (Maizie wonders about things like that ... don't bother to ask why)? How do women use toilets sunk into the floor (like in China and Thailand)? What is the meaning of life? ('er, scratch that last one...)
These, and other deep questions, deserve your attention ... so get on the ball, and answer them ...

Now, from deep to shallow ... what is Harvey Whittemore thinking? He wants to develop 50,000 homes and 10 more golf courses in Las Vegas ... we are in a drought, folks ... that's spelled D.R.O.U.G.H.T ... (it means No Water for the conceptually impaired) ... and we're supposed to "ration" ours ... now there's a plan afoot to dip into the Las Vegas aquifers to get more ... say goodbye to pupfish, rancher's wells, desert plants, etc. ... all to make Las Vegas greener (lawns or money ... take your pick) ... sounds like a gigantic flush job to us ...

TV summer programming sucks ... just thought you'd like to know. And the repetitive news ... yuck ... like the policeman in LA ... how many times do we have to see someone beating someone else with a flashlight (shades of Rodney King) ... once or twice is more than enough ... so, enough already ....

Have you noticed that many of our grand old fraternal organizations and service clubs are populated by "older" folks and don't have younger, newer members joining? Why is that? Would some of the "younger" generation answer that? Too much TV? Too many other responsibilities? Too many material things? Just asking ...

Some people have told Carolyn that some of our highway signage could be a little more clear ... one example is on Interstate 80 at the turnoff to Carson and Susanville ... it points them out, but doesn't say "south" or "north" ... to someone from out of town, the direction would be a plus ....

This is a "cockroach with taste" story ... one of us went to a restaurant a couple of months ago and saw a cockroach crawling over the curb, leaving the restaurant ... gee, when the cockroaches can't take the food ... does that tell us something? We're reserving judgment until we see the next Board of Health ratings ....

Splendid people: Lt. Ehren Miller ... "local boy makes good" ... congratulations to Carson City's most recent graduate of West Point. And to Sgt. (E7) and Mrs. Boucher and family ... you all looked wonderful at the Father's Day steam-up at the Nevada State Railroad Museum this past weekend ... the sergeant turned out in his dress blues with all his decorations (he is being deployed with the 221st Cavalry, Yerington unit, out of Fort Irwin, Calif.) and looked wonderful ... his family looked wonderful, too ... Mom and daughters, beautiful and pretty in their dresses. All our best to both of you and your families ....

"Happy Anniversary" to Sara and Kurt ... Kress and Brian ... and Julie and Brian (that Brian ... he "gets around" ... just kidding ... it's two different ones ... "and many mooooore..."

First it was a man in the "john" who liked us ... now another man says he likes to read our column, but it puts him to sleep if we don't "name names" ... soooo, Steve Walker ... wake up ... we're naming you ... no more excuses ... yaaawn ....

The turtle who used to sun himself on the old tire at the "late" Nevada State Railroad Museum duck ponds, has been saved, according to Kim at Greenhouse Garden Center ... he is alive and well at their business ... and is receiving visitors at this time ....

As for the duck ponds ... Supervisor Richard Staub tells us it's the drought that "done them in" ...and Lisa McDonald at the Railroad Museum has hopes that someone will offer to help line the ponds, and, with the cooperation of Greenhouse Garden Center, will see that they come back to their former glory ... the ducks, geese and trees will thank you ....

Have a happy and safe Fourth of July ... will there be fireworks this year? We haven't heard ... but we hope so ... and if you need someone to come to your barbecue ... let us know ... "have fork, will travel ...."
