Fabulous trolling with a fly at Bishop's South Lake

BISHOP CREEK AREA, CALIF:

Gary Olson of the Bishop Creek Resorts (760-873-4484) reported:

Intake No. 2: Just continues to keep pumping out fish. We are having few to no complaints on fishing. Power Bait or Salmon eggs are doing very well. Yellow or Root Beer Stingers are fantastic.

North Lake: Rainbow Power Bait or nightcrawlers are bringing in nice limits.

Roostertail lures doing well, along with gold Kastmasters.

South Lake: The fishing has been awesome for the last month and continues to be great.

Most baits and lures are working with nightcrawlers being the tops from shore, and Power Bait working well by the dam.

Trolling on the Rock Slide with monofiliment line and a red-headed green Matuka fly has been rated as fabulous.

Behind the island has been incredible with silver/blue Trout Traps or with a Perch-colored Thomas Buoyant lures.

Anglers are reporting 30-fish days, constantly, with some nice sized fish, but most in the half-pound range. Even a few brookies are showing up.

Bishop Creek: A 2-pound, 1-ounce rainbow on Salmon eggs.

Nightcrawlers or Salmon eggs are best with Roostertail and gold Kastmasters doing very well.

Be sure to bring repellent.

BISHOP CREEK AREA, CALIF:

Sabrina Lake: Carolyn Webb of the Lake Sabrina Boat Landing (760-873-7425): Fishing has still remained terrific for most anglers even with the afternoon thunderstorms and the full moon.

Plenty of stringers of pan-size fish were seen leaving the waters of Lake Sabrina over the Fourth of July weekend.

Working the inlets with worms or eggs are your best bet.

All colors of Power Bait are also landing quite a few fish.

Trolling red or gold lures or fly's like wooly-buggers or matuka's are succeeding near the shore lines.

Mosquitoes with a bobber are enticing quite a few fish early in the morning or at dusk.

Remember the repellent! The skeeters are here at least for a month or so.

BLUE LAKES, CALIF. AREA:

Dave Kirby of the Woodfords Station (530-694-2930) said that were reports of limits of trout taken on Power Bait. Nothing big but some nice fish. Go prepared with repellent for mosquitoes.

BRIDGEPORT RESERVOIR, CALIF: Jim Reid of Ken's Sporting Goods Store (760-932-7707) said, "The fishing has gotten even better since my last report. They are really hammering them.

Most of the boaters are stillfishing with nightcrawlers or Power Bait. A few boaters are doing phenomenal, anchoring and throwing lures like Panther/Martin.

The fish are coming up to the surface for the midges and they are bumping the surface until about noon, each day.

The successful spincasters have been catching their fish in the top 1-2 feet of water. One spincaster reported catching and releasing a total of 48 trout.

EAST CARSON RIVER AREA, CALIF: Todd Sodaro at the Carson River Resort (877-694-2229) reported fishing was spectacular over the holiday weekend.

Some of the larger fish were:

A 3-pound, 15-ounce rainbow on nightcrawlers.

A 3-pound, 9-ounce rainbow on Salmon eggs by Chad Keller or Escondaro, Calif.

Blair and Blaine Strohn used Panther/Martin lures to catch their 1-pound rainbows.

WEST CARSON RIVER AREA, CALIF: Dave Kirby reported that a husband and wife, Tom and Jeanie Goldstone of Gardnerville, each did very well on July 3.

Tom caught a 7-pound rainbow on a Roostertail lure and she caught a 4-pound rainbow on a nightcrawler.

Peter Alverez of Lodi caught a 5-pound rainbow.

DAVIS LAKE, CALIF: Sara at the Grizzly Store and Resort (530-832-0270): Trolling is fair, but better in the p.m. Best action in main channel from boat ramp to island. Troll 20-25 feet deep with Needlefish lures.

Shore fishing is spotty.

Fly fishing best areas are from Camp Five to Cow Creek.

FEATHER RIVER AT OROVILLE, CALIF: Kirk Portocarrero reported that he and his clients are catching limits of chrome King Salmon, 12-25 pounds. Not real consistent, right now. Back-trolling with Flatfish lures, between Oroville and Gridley. Water flow is 6,900 CFS. The limit is one salmon per person now. On July 16 the limit per person will increase to 3 salmon.

INDIAN CREEK RESERVOIR. CALIF: Dave Kirby said that Tom Shane of Carson City caught a 4.5 pound rainbow on a small fly on the Fourth.

The algae is blooming, the fishing has slowed down, the water is getting warmer and the fish are going deeper. The two 15-pound rainbow planters have not yet been caught.

Summit Lake (above Indian Creek Reservoir): No report.

KIRMAN (CARMEN) LAKE: Jim Reid that fishing at best is rated marginal. The best fishing in that area is currently at Poore, Secret, Roosevelt and Lane Lakes.

LAHONTAN RESERVOIR, NEV: Shirley at Burke's Market at Silver Springs (775-577-2750) said, "The weekend was nice, mellow, good but long. Lahontan was full of people but not as full as on Memorial Day. We had lots of fishermen buying bait but no one reported back in.

PYRAMID LAKE, NEV: Is closed to cutthroat trout fishing until Oct. 1.

SACRAMENTO RIVER, CALIF: Kirk Portocarrero of Outdoor Adventures Sport Fishing, Redding, Calif. (800-670-4448):

Redding to Anderson: Water flow is 15,000 CFS.

Fishing for rainbow trout is great with 15-30 fish days. Catching and releasing wild, trophy rainbows, up to 6 pounds. Using Pheasant Tails, Prince Nymphs, Caddis patterns and egg patterns.

Red Bluff: The King Salmon season will open on July 16.

Fish count over the Red Bluff Diversion Dam is 1,519 King Salmon as compared to 1,218 last year, same date.

SILVER CREEK, CALIF: Todd Sodaro at the Carson River Resort (877-694-2229) reported that couple (Bill and Karline) caught a 5-pound rainbow.

SHASTA LAKE, CALIF: Kirk Portocarrero reported limits of King Salmon 1-4 pounds and up to 23 inches. Trolling with Shad pattern lures. Catching rainbows and Salmon in the Dry Creek Area.

LAKE TAHOE - North Shore:

Mickey Daniels of Mickey's Big Mack Charters (800-877-1462) said: "We've been catching our Mackinaw trout early in the morning and I've been tagging and releasing the smaller ones.

The fishing has been very good but nothing super big.

I troll 250-550 feet deep in the deep-water area in front of Carnelian Bay and King's Beach.

We are using silver, Herring Dodger flasher blades with live minnows or large Apex lures."

Gene St. Denis of Blue Ribbon Charters and Tahoe Trophy Trout at South Lake Tahoe, Calif. (530-544-6552) said he is trolling with a short leader, Herring Dodger flasher blades and live minnows at 150-300 feet deep in the Tahoe City area.

LAKE TAHOE - South Shore:

Gene St. Denis of Blue Ribbon Charters and Tahoe Trophy Trout at South Lake Tahoe, Calif. (530-544-6552) said he is trolling in the Camp Richardson and Baldwin Beach areas with a short leader, Herring Dodger flasher blades and live minnows at 160-280 feet deep.

LAKE TAHOE - East Shore:

Gene St. Denis said that Cave Rock Shelf has been producing mostly smaller fish.

Jiggers are doing the best.

The Macks are running 1-3 pounds with nothing over 5 pounds.

TOPAZ LAKE: Linda Fields of the Topaz Lake Marina (775-266-3550): Fishing has really slowed down with the hot weather and the full moon.

They are not getting very many fish.

About all we had over the Fourth of July weekend were water skiers and jet skis.

TWIN LAKES, CALIF. AREA:

Lower Twin: The Twin Lakes Resort (760-932-7751):

Fishing has really exploded, tons of fish are being caught.

Since the 28th of June, at least 20 fish, 3-pounds or over, have been landed. Power Bait, nightcrawlers, Spin-A-Lures, and Rapalas are working the best.

Jacob Leach, age 9, caught a 4-pound, 2-ounce rainbow, using Power Bait. Allen Frugoi, age 10, caught a 3-pound, 10-ounce rainbow with Power Bait.

Dennis Coyle of Modesto caught four rainbows: a 5-pound, a 4.5-pound, a 3.75-pound and a 3.5-pound, all on Power Bait.

Upper Twin: Mono Village (760-932-7071) reported:

A 5-pound rainbow on Zeke's Sierra Gold.

A 4-pound, 10-ounce rainbow on a red/gold Thomas Buoyant lure.

Norm Arnett put in 40 of his hand-fed rainbows from his private ponds. They average 2-5 pounds.

Water temp is holding at 56 degrees.

Robinson Creek: Is doing really well.

VIRGINIA LAKES, CALIF. AREA: Jim Reid reported that these lakes are the most consistent in that general area. They are doing very good with baits, spinners and flies.

WALKER RIVERS:

East Walker (Calif.): Jim Reid said that Nymphs are working the best. Water flow is 205 CFS.

West Walker (Calif.): Jim Reid said the river is still a little high but fishing well with Nymkphs or Caddis flies.

East Walker (Nev.): No report.

West Walker (Nev.): No report.

Little Walker (Calif.): Good for small rainbows and brookies on worms or Salmon eggs in the Willow Flat area.

WILDHORSE RESERVOIR NEV: Dennis Dunn at the Wild Horse Resort (775) 758-6472 said, "The weather is beautiful.

We had some rain on Friday and it really came down on Saturday.

Everything is soaked so we don't have any fire danger, like you guys.

The fishing is still pretty good with lots of limits.

The trout fishermen are catching either 8-12 inch planters or big trout, up to 4-pounds.

The perch fishermen need to get past all of those 3-4 inch perch to get to the bigger ones.

There are lots of Cats being caught."
