Still plenty of entertainment despite yet another fire

Well, here's another entertainment column hammered despite growing concern over something more important: another wildfire burning out of control. This time, it's burning north of Washoe Lake. Already on Wednesday afternoon, several homes appear to have been destroyed. You can hear the concern in the voices of firefighters over the scanner.

"We're startin' to lose structures up here," said one at 2:42 p.m.

"We have one house involved, and I'm just here with engine 13," said another. "If you can get anybody over here, we could use it."

Others are so excited you can't even make out their words through the distortion of high winds. Hopefully by the time this column is printed, the fire is contained and no one has been hurt.

With dusty tornados of ash swirling above the capital after the Waterfall fire, Carson City's Shade Tree Council will have a lot to talk about at their meeting tonight. Join them at City Hall at 5:30 to give your ideas or to ask about becoming a member.

Three service clubs will join forces for a social event, walk and brown-bag dinner at the Silver Saddle Ranch on Friday night. Muscle Powered, GROW (Gardners Reclaiming Our Waysides) and Friends of the Silver Saddle Ranch will meet at 5:30 at the ranch on Carson River Road near Mexican Ditch (go east on Fifth Street past the state prison, straight through the roundabout and take the next right. It's about two miles out).

After a scenic walk, a short presentation will be given on each group. For details, call 885-2166.

This week's free Fridays @ Third Street concert will feature Johnny Slick and The Cheaters. They'll play between Mom and Pop's Diner and Devincenzi's Italian Restaurant on Third Street, which will be closed to traffic. Mom and Pop's will host outdoor food and beverage booths. Call 884-4411.

Another free concert Friday night will be at Decades Bar and Grill out at 1475 Hot Springs Road. Phat Tuesday will play late into the evening starting at 9 p.m. Call 883-8889.

Fox Carlton Hughes, whose artwork has been on display at the Brewery Arts Center since early this month, will have a closing reception on Tuesday evening to celebrate the end of the show. If you haven't seen his fascinating abstract pieces (derived from photos he took more than 30 years ago), consider attending from 5 until 9 p.m.

Hughes plans to teach classes in illustrating and writing children's books at the arts center. Watch for posters reading, "Release the Creative Genie Within You."

Bob Marley's sons will perform a reggae concert with Toots and the Maytals on Wednesday night at Caesar's Tahoe. I've never seen the Marley brothers, but I guarantee Toots will be a killer show. With his black leather pants and funky moves, he's like the James Brown of reggae.

At a concert in Portland a few years back, a bunch of us got pulled onstage by Toots' backup singers.

Live entertainment is now being offered at Daddy Dick's Tavern, 1305 S. Carson St. The band Mad Cow will be followed by DJ Jason Stofer on Sunday starting at 8 p.m. There will be a $3 cover. Call 885-0558.
