Nominees are being sought for the fifth annual Community Awards sponsored by the Nevada Appeal and Carson Access Television. Awards are given in recognition of residents' outstanding achievements during the past year.

Awards are presented in eight categories:

n Student of the Year

n Educator of the Year

n Artist of the Year

n Athlete or Sportsman of the Year

n Boss of the Year

n Employee of the Year

n Citizen of the Year

n Organization of the Year

Nominations must be postmarked or sent by e-mail no later than April 16. They must include a written description of the nominee's activities, talents, achievements or contributions that would justify the award. The more detailed, the better.

One category has been changed from Humanitarian of the Year to Citizen of the Year.

"It's not a major change because we still see the category honoring someone whose good deeds should be recognized," said Appeal Editor Barry Smith. "But we thought calling it 'Citizen of the Year' would broaden the category a bit and clarify that nominees didn't have to be Mother Teresa to qualify."

The address for nominations is Nevada Appeal, PO Box 2288, Carson City, NV 89702. They may also be e-mailed to editor@nevadaappeal.com. People sending nominations should include their own name and telephone number so they may be contacted for additional information.

Residents anywhere in the Nevada Appeal's circulation area are eligible for the awards.

Members of the Nevada Appeal's reader panel and CAT-10 board will narrow the list of nominees to three finalists in each category. The winners will be announced at a luncheon May 21 at the Carson Nugget.

Community Awards sponsored by the Appeal and CAT-10 began in 2000, although they stem from a 30-year tradition of the Carson City Area Chamber of Commerce.
