'Sweet 16' pretty nice place to be

Way to go Nevada ... "Sweet 16" success never smelled so good ... UNR has shown it can play with the "big boys" cuz "now they are one"... Go Wolf Pack!

(And you heard it here first ... when they played Kansas, we said if they played with that intensity all the time, they would be in the big time ... so there ... signed: the Carson City seers.)

"Someone," who shall be nameless (but it wasn't Maizie), called her 1962 CHS reunion committee members and said their meeting was postponed until Sunday because she couldn't get there Saturday. Guess who forgot to show up Sunday? Just remember, it wasn't Maizie ...

Thanks to the reader who sent us a dollar because he heard we didn't earn any money ... we're having it framed. He also kindly compared us to Herb Caen, the late, great columnist from San Francisco ... good grief, we'll have to be good from now on ... don't know if that's possible ... but, many thanks anyway... from the Caenettes ...

Don't forget the Boys & Girls Club of Western Nevada and its Youth & Community Awards Dinner on Thursday at the Piñon Plaza Hotel Casino at 7 p.m. Come on, guys and gals ... fork up the $20 for a ticket and support a good cause.

And now for an "Oprah moment" ... Michelle Olson was having dinner at Tito's the other night with her four children, her father and stepmother when a waitress came up and said, "This is going to be an Oprah moment for you."

Michelle, of course, asked why, and the waitress replied, "The lady who was sitting next to you was so impressed by the way you spoke to your children and how well-behaved they were, that she paid for all your dinners."

How neat is that? Since Michelle doesn't know who it was, she wanted us to thank the lady for her kindness ... so, thank you. Gee, for a free dinner, we can be well-behaved, too (maybe, sorta) ...

For example, Duane "Beans" Souza, the fine guitarist at the Station Grill, sang an original song to us while we were dining, and we didn't burp or anything ...

When you go out to watch the races this year, be sure to wave at the new "Miss Championship Speedway," Lori Morris ... she's so happy to be representing them this year ... congratulations, and have a great season ...

So the state wants to pay the Lompa family $1.9 million for their property ... ha ha ha ... was that a 1902 appraisal? Shoot ... for that kind of money, we'd buy it (if somebody loaned it to us, of course) ...

And the unions and Carson-Tahoe Hospital are at odds over wages and benefits ... we heard they had a "gentleman's agreement" not to go after each other until their case was heard in court on April 19 ... so much for being gentlemanly ...

Fragments: How about an outdoor roller rink in the Wal-Mart parking lot while we're waiting for something else to happen? The supervisors could run it and make money to take up the tax void.

Then there's "George W. Bush and I approve this message." Excuse us ... but are there two of them? Maybe cloning is upon us and we just don't know it ...

And E. R. Dupree, in a letter to the editor, bemoans the lack of water in Walker Lake ... you bet, the state should do something about it ... otherwise we'll lose a real state "treasure."

Let's hope Glen Adair and his wife have a glorious time in well-earned retirement ... aloha ...

John Griffin, a local attorney, told how, several years ago, he had stayed late to work on a project in the Capitol in Washington, D.C. ... when he left the building in the wee hours, no one had told him that the subways stopped running at midnight and cabs at that hour were nonexistent.

As he sat on the curb wondering what to do, he heard a voice say, "Would you like a ride home?" He looked up into the face of Sen. John Kerry, who loaded him up in the car, took him for an early breakfast, and went out of his way to take him home. A great memory for a young man ... a telling story of a man who would later run for president ...
