Gary Wilbur Schubert

Gary Wilbur Schubert, 59, a Winnemucca resident for 57 years, died April 29, 2004, at his home of cancer. He was born May 15, 1944, in Berkeley, Calif., to Janet Jorgensen and Webb Schubert.

He grew up and attended schools in Winnemucca.

Mr. Schubert owned and operated his own well drilling and pump setting business for many years. He worked as a mechanic for Maga Trucking and Owens Ford.

He was an avid fisherman and hunter and enjoyed the outdoors. He built and raced his own hot rod during the 1960s at the Winnemucca Racetrack. He also rebuilt and flew a Cessna airplane which garnered media attention as he was one of a very few amputee licensed pilots in the country at that time. He had begun building another airplane when he became ill. He was baptized in the Lutheran Church in Berkeley and was a member of the United Methodist Church of Winnemucca.

He joined the Army National Guard and was honorably discharged February 1966.

Among his survivors are his mother, Janet Verner of Carson City; daughter, Marlene Martin and grandson George Martin, both of Oroville, Calif.; sisters and brothers-in-law Jean and Larry Sabin of Yerington, and Nilva and Dave Wise of Carson City; brother and sister-in-law Dr. Dennis and Lisa Verner of Winnemucca; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Services were Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Winnemucca with Dr. Jim Phifer officiating.
