Nevada has a new trade representative in Hong Kong, and his knowledge of Chinese aviation may prove important to the area served by Reno/Tahoe International Airport.
The Nevada Commission on Economic Development appointed William Ng to help Nevada businesses develop export opportunities in Hong Kong.
Airport executives are intrigued by Ng's knowledge of Chinese aviation, particularly as they focus on development of better international service from the Reno airport.
Ng currently represents the Los Angeles World Airport better known as LAX as well as the Port of Los Angeles.
He's also a director of three international transportation companies.
"We anticipate his expertise will help strengthen our relationships with Chinese aviation officials," said Krys Bart, the executive director of the airport.
The airport doesn't have a contract with Ng.
Ng, like the state's trade representatives elsewhere in the Far East, isn't paid for his services.
Instead, he will work on commissions for his services to Nevada businesses.
They're not obligated to use the state's trade representatives.
Bob Shriver, executive director of the commission on economic development, said the cost of a state-run trade office typically runs $75,000 or more a year.
Nevada has arrangements similar to those with Ng with trade representatives in Taiwan, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Japan and China.
Along with his help to potential exporters, Ng also will provide information to Hong Kong companies that want to do business in the state.
