Federal firefighting budget

The fire-fighting budget for Nevada's Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest - at 6.3 million acres the largest national forest in the United States outside Alaska - is about $30 million.

The budget is broken into two parts, explained Mike Dondero, chief of fire and aviation for the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest.

First, there's the "preparedness budget," allocated to hire people, staff fire engines, pay hot shots crews, etc. The preparedness budget for Humboldt-Toiyabe is about $6.5 million.

The other budget is used to fight fire. The Forest Service has spent about $25 million each of the last few years to battle blazes in the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest.
