It's about a relationship with God

The Rev. Chuck Nichter recently founded Wellspring Church and Ministries in Washoe Valley.

"I'm not here to preach at the people, but more to encourage them to find out who they are in Christ and who Christ is in them," he said. "This ministry is about a relationship (with God), not religion."

Nichter, 53, was saved in 1978 while living a life of sin in Las Vegas.

"I lost a lot in one day, but I grew up in the Lord after that."

Nichter enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed at Nellis Air Force Base in 1973-74. He also served in the Vietnam War, stationed in Thailand.

"I'm very passionate about patriotism, as passionate as I am about the ministry," Nichter said.

Beliefs of the church are founded on the Bible, "The Holy Word of God." They believe salvation comes through the cross and the shed blood of Jesus Christ; that there is a Heaven to gain and a hell to shun; in freewill and that God's free gift of salvation through His Son, Jesus Christ, is there for us to receive with redemption from our sins.

After moving to Washoe Valley in 1987, Nichter began working with the late Roy Parker, pastor of Full Gospel Church. Parker became a mentor for Nichter.

"He really encouraged me. He let me lead worship services at the church."

Nichter said Wellspring Church and Ministries looks to reach out to people who have been hurt by the church for whatever reason.

"The congregation should not be talked to, but encouraged to grow and mature. And the church should be interactive.

"Individuals here have just as much a connection to God as pastors. This is what I want to teach. I'm nobody special, just someone who was called to God. I just want to serve him."

Nichter holds Thursday evening Bible study in his home.

He has no specific long-term plans at this time, he just wants to serve people and the Lord.

"People shouldn't be afraid of church," he said.
