Rhoda Fisher

A life celebration for Rhoda Fisher, 85, a Carson City resident for the past 42 years, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at 1555 Twin Oaks Road, Reno. For directions call 851-1555 or 324-1155.

Mrs. Fisher died Nov. 1, 2004. She was born Oct. 8, 1919, in Sanish, N.D., to Henry and Regina Hanson.

In 1942, she received a bachelor of science degree from Billings Polytechnic Institute, Rocky Mountain College, Montana. She attended UNR for advanced teaching credentials.

She lived in Idaho and Washington where she taught English and health in the public school system.

After moving to Carson City, she taught girls physical education, health and nutrition at the Stewart Indian School for 20 years. She was instrumental in the construction and equipping of the Stewart Gymnasium and the girls' interschool sports program.

Mrs. Fisher was an artisan and a talented and gifted quilter. She won many awards including first place at Quilt International in San Diego, National Grange Quilt Contest and the Good Housekeeping Quilts of America contest. One of her quilts was included in the Smithsonian Institute Exhibit and toured internationally. She crafted quilts for newborns at Carson-Tahoe Hospital in need of special care. She taught many quilting classes. She had a green thumb and was famous for her roses and raspberries. She was a gifted cook and had a tremendous love of animals.

She received several awards including the U.S. Senate Certificate of Commendation in recognition and appreciation for improving the quality of life for older adults throughout Nevada, a Senatorial Recognition and the Congressional Certificate of Appreciation for outstanding contributions to our community as a Sanford Senior Star.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Orin.

Among her survivors are her husband of 57 years, Charles; son and daughter-in-law, John and Alice Fisher; daughter and son-in-law, Syd and Don McKenzie; granddaughters Christa Fisher, Anne, Emily and Amanda McKenzie; and step grandchildren Amy and Ryan McKenzie.
