Boot-scootin' fun at the Mansion

Rub shoulders with Kenny and first lady Dema Guinn at the Governor's Tin Cup Tea and Chuck Wagon Barbecue Saturday at the Governor's Mansion, 606 N. Mountain St.

Get there at 6 p.m. for the first sips and hot ribs and stay until 10 p.m. when they roll up the red carpets. Tickets are $45 each. Dig out your old jeans and boots with spurs, and you'll be dressed to fit in. Tours of the mansion may not match those of the White House, but you're here and not in Washington, D.C.

Those Guys and Gals of old Virginia City will be dancing and hootin' and hollerin' so prepare for a lively night. No need to take hearing aids to enjoy the music.

While there, be sure to admire the big sign for the meeting room that Nevada Appeal columnist Guy Farmer thinks is a bit overdone. For information, call 687-4810.

I've been told that Daddy Dick's Tavern at 1305 S. Carson St. is going to host up to nine local bands Sunday starting at 5 p.m. and blasting away until midnight.

Promoter Zach Denson says the idea is to give local players a chance to blow away. Some of the bands, none exactly flying above the musical horizon, include From Behind Glass, Breath Taken, Real Eye, Broken Salvation, Uncut, Consender and Lysergic Funeral Procession.

For those under 21, tickets are $5; for those seniors over 21, it's only $3. Don't ask why. Call 885-0558.

The big-band music of the '30s and '40s was a time when dancing was the thing. And it still is, as the Tahoe Dance Band will demonstrate Friday from 7:30 to 10 p.m. at the Kahle Community Center off Kingsbury Grade in Stateline.

Plop down five bucks and return to the days of Glenn Miller, Artie Shaw and Benny Goodman. Smooth stuff, but maybe not rock fans' beat.

Be among the first Friday to take in the exhibition of drawings at the Caffeine Gallery in Comma Coffee with an artists' reception from 5-6 p.m. The show is free and features drawings by Shelby Moulden and Milan Delvechio through Sept. 30. Call June Joplin at 287-2252 and let her tell you about the show. Or go to the show and tell June what you thought of it. Or just go and enjoy nice pictures.

Lift a tankard at the Brewery Arts Center's beer tasting on Friday after looking at the art at Comma Coffee. It's for the good of the Brewery's BAC Stage Kids program at $25 a pop. Many brews will include some micros on hand, so sip and smile. Call 883-1976 for directions if you don't know where the BAC is.

Then there's the International Camel Races up in Virginia City. They run Friday through Sunday, and there's even a Hump Ball, a jockey party today. Tickets for the races are $10, or pay $30 and get high-class treatment, including food and beverages.

Piper's Opera House is holding an ice cream social on Sunday with free ice cream to all camels and friends of camels. That includes you.

Collin Raye offers the music at the 11th annual Worlds Greatest BBQ and auction to benefit the Boys & Girls Club of Western Nevada on Saturday.

Yes, you already know about the event. Now just make sure that you get there and grab a celebrity seat for a modest $250. That includes the barbecue, of course. For the working class, tickets are only $50, but you don't get to chow down.

Raye is currently in the superstar class, and he's flying in just for this show. Give him a hand. If you're lucky, he'll sing something from his newest album, "World History 101." And you can help the boys and girls as well.
