Governor to host ceremony to remember 9/11

A ceremony Saturday led by Gov. Kenny Guinn will mark the three-year anniversary of the terrorist attacks on New York, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania.

"Saturday's event will be a time of reflection, and a day to remember the loss of thousands of brave Americans. It is important to remember, however, that from loss often comes hope. In the wake of the 9/11 attacks, our nation has grown stronger," Guinn said.

The event will begin at 11 a.m. on the front lawn of the Capitol and will feature a 6-minute video entitled "Nevada: Proud. Prepared. Protected."

"In the three years since the 9/11 attacks, our state has responded in remarkable fashion to the challenge of making our communities, our transportation hubs and our places of business safer. Nevada's emergency and law enforcement personnel are more prepared today for emergencies and disasters than at any other time in our state's history," he said. "The Department of Public Safety works seamlessly with law enforcement, fire departments and emergency agencies so that our citizens can travel freely and safely throughout our state."

Speakers during the hour-long ceremony will include the governor; Administrator of Homeland Security Adjutant General Giles Vanderhoof; Director of the Department of Public Safety George Togliatti and Caroline Punches, executive director of the American Red Cross.

Robert McQueen High School Marching Band will perform patriotic music. The first 1,000 attendees will receive a hand-held American flag and lapel pin.

Also Saturday, a C Hill Flag Rally will begin at 8 a.m. at the C Hill saddle area west of Rhodes Street. Free hot dogs, hamburgers and refreshments will be served.
